Leah Hennessey & Emily Allan

2019 Guest Artists

Emily Allan and Leah Hennessey are playwrights, directors, and actors best known for their web series Zhe Zhe, a camp satire of New York City's performance scene, and for their recent two-person show Slash, which also considered “slash” culture and homoerotic fan fiction about iconic celebrity and fictional pairings.

After returning from CERN, Allan and Hennessey produced in January 2020 a science fiction play Star Odyssey: The Pilot, which explores imperialism, empathy, and bio-warfare and commissioned by MoMA PS1. Taking inspiration from the structure of Star Trek, the play is the story of the lonely Captain Quinn and her poetry-obsessed First Officer on a mission to obtain a sample of a mysterious deadly virus on an alien planet. When crafting the aesthetics of the stage design, Hennessey and Allan were inspired by the infrastructure of the Antimatter Factory and the Data Center at CERN to design a late 1960s futurist utopian scenery. Listen to the adapted version of the show as a radio play here.

Their residency was organised in collaboration with the Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève as part of the Biennale de l'Image en Mouvement 2020.
